As an entrepreneur with self-identified ADHD, I’ve learned that this condition can be both a blessing and a challenge. In this article, I want to share my personal experience of managing ADHD while running my business.
Embracing the Hyperfocus: One of the hallmark traits of ADHD is hyperfocus, which can be a powerful asset in the entrepreneurial world. When I’m passionate about a project or idea, I can dive into it with an incredible intensity. This hyperfocus has allowed me to make significant progress on critical business tasks, often leading to innovative solutions and breakthroughs.

I soon learned the importance of prioritising tasks and delegating when necessary to maintain productivity and quality. But I still struggle in this area.
Managing Time and Distractions: Time management is a constant challenge for individuals with ADHD. I’ve had to experiment with various strategies to keep myself on track. Tools like task lists, time-blocking, and setting regular reminders have become invaluable in my daily routine. Additionally, creating a dedicated workspace with minimal distractions has proven to be a game-changer, when I can adhere to it!
Turning Impulsivity into Innovation: Entrepreneurship requires making quick decisions, and ADHD can actually be an asset in this regard. My impulsivity has led to some bold and creative business moves that paid off in unexpected ways. It’s important to strike a balance between embracing spontaneity and considering the potential risks involved.
Seeking Support and Self-Care: Perhaps the most critical lesson I’ve learned is the importance of seeking support and practicing self-care. Connecting with a therapist who specialises in ADHD and joining support groups has been instrumental in managing my symptoms. Regular exercise, mindfulness, and a balanced diet have also played a significant role in maintaining my focus and well-being.
Self-Discovery and Seeking Diagnosis: I’ve always wondered if I had ADHD, and after researching and looking at the traits commonly associated with the condition, I found myself relating to all of these points. It was a moment of self-discovery that prompted me to delve deeper into understanding my unique cognitive processes, and into creating our very own Understanding and Supporting ADHD course.
The process of writing this blog has been quite enlightening. It has not only provided me with an opportunity to share my experience but has also prompted me to take a significant step in my journey. I’ve decided to seek an official diagnosis for ADHD. I believe that a formal diagnosis can open up new avenues for tailored treatment and support, and it can offer clarity on how to best manage my business and life in a way that accommodates my brain’s unique wiring.
